Argentina Travel Tips |
| |
| Located at the tip of South America, Argentina is a country that boasts stunning natural wonders and delightful cosmopolitan cities with a European feel to them. It is a vast country spanning more than 1.1 million square miles of great geographic diversity including rainforests, marshlands, rich plains, mountains and deserts. It has a population of close to 40 million people, almost 30% of which live in the greater Buenos Aires area – the country's capital city. |
| Here are some useful facts that will help you prepare for your trip: |
| |
Weather |
| The country's territory offers a wide variety of climates: subtropical in the North, sub-Antarctic in the southern Patagonia, and mild and humid in the Pampas plains. Below we've listed average temperatures for selected regions. We include more specific weather related information within the Important Information link for each of our trips. |

Language |
| Spanish is the official language of Argentina but large portions of the population know enough English to help you get around. Most students begin taking English classes in grade school and continue through high school. |
| |
| Time Zone |
| Argentina Standard Time is 3 hours
behind Greenwich Mean Time. Daylight Saving Time is observed in the
Eastern areas of the country where clocks spring forward 1 hour from
October - March. That means Buenos Aires is 1 hour ahead of North
American Eastern Standard Time from April - September and 3 hours
ahead the rest of the year. |
| |
Money Matters |
| Currency |
The Argentine Peso is the official currency and we recommend that you pay for your purchases in local currency or using a
credit card. Although US dollars are usually accepted, you won't benefit from the exchange rates given to you by local shops.
The acceptance of traveler's checks is sporadic in Buenos Aires and is not a common practice in the rest of the country. ATM's are readily available in every city and town we visit (except El Chalten) and are compatible with US and Canadian banking networks. |
| |
The exchange rate is roughly 3 pesos to 1 American and Canadian Dollar. Click
here to view the current exchange rate. |
| Currency bills are in $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 peso denominations and it is quite common for shops & taxis to not have change for large bills readily available. Coins exist in $1, $0.50, $0.25, $0.10 and $0.05 denominations. |
| |
|
| |
Tax Refunds |
VAT Tax (the equivalent to sales tax in the US) refunds are available on in-country purchases greater than $70 pesos in
shops that operating with the “Global Refund” system. VAT rates range from 10% to 21% depending on the location and
items you are purchasing. To receive your refund: |
| |
| 1- Look for participating shops displaying the global refund logo |
 |
|
| 2- Ask for a Global Refund Check when you purchase your goods |
| 3- Get our Global Refund Check stamped at the airport customs counter. |
|
| 4- Collect your refund in the Airport before you leave. |
|
|
| |
| Tipping |
| When you're on your own, keep in mind that it's customary to leave a 10% tip for meals & bar tabs. Taxi drivers don't generally expect tips, but many locals round fares up to the nearest peso. |
| |
| While traveling with the group, tipping drivers, guides, porters & bag handlers etc. is not expected, but ok if you wish to do so. |
| |
| Electrical Power |
| Electricity in Argentina operates with 220 volts, 50 Hz. Plugs used are the Europlug and the Australian style plug. |
